Choosing outdoor pavers
Why 20mm? Standard 10mm tiles flex and crack under outdoor loads and thermal movement. 20mm tiles have the body mass to handle vehicle loads, outdoor furniture, and Australia's temperature swings without cracking.
Slip rating guide. R10 for sheltered alfresco and covered areas. R11 for pool surrounds and exposed areas. R12 for commercial applications or high-traffic outdoor zones.
Pool surrounds. Choose a tile with an R11 or higher slip rating and a matte or textured finish. Light colours reflect heat better in direct sun — important for barefoot comfort in summer.
Installation & ordering
Substrate requirements. 20mm pavers can be laid on a sand/aggregate bed (pedestal or loose-lay system) or on a mortar bed. Never lay on a timber subfloor without engineering sign-off.
Grout and jointing. Use flexible outdoor grout with anti-fungal additives. Minimum 5mm joints for thermal movement. Larger format tiles need larger joints.
Order wastage. Add 10% for square patterns. 15% for diagonal or angled layouts. Always keep spare tiles — outdoor pavers are hard to colour-match from different batches.

Outdoor paver questions
What slip rating do I need for outdoor pavers in Australia?
Covered alfresco areas need P4 minimum (R11). Open patios and courtyards need P4. Pool surrounds and ramps require P5 (R11/R12). Check AS 4586 — Australian standard for slip resistance — and request the manufacturer test certificate if not on the product page.
What thickness do I need for outdoor pavers?
20mm is the standard for outdoor porcelain pavers. The thickness handles the structural and thermal cycles of being outdoors. 10mm indoor tile is not rated for outdoor use — it can fracture under load on a sand-cement bed or pedestal install.
Can I use the same pavers around a pool?
Yes if they carry P5 (R11+) slip rating and the manufacturer states pool-surround use. Many of our 20mm pavers do. Lay with at least 1:100 fall away from the pool and a wider 5–8mm grout joint to maximise drainage and grip when wet.
Do outdoor pavers fade in the Australian sun?
Quality porcelain pavers from European manufacturers are UV-stable and won't fade — the colour pigment is fired into the body, not surface-printed. Cheaper imports without UV testing can fade or chalk in 2–3 years of full sun exposure. Always confirm UV stability before buying for an exposed location.
