Zellige tiles in a luxury bathroom

Zellige tiles.

No two tiles are identical. That's the point. Hand-pressed, hand-glazed, fired in small batches, each tile has its own variation in tone, texture and depth that machine-made tile can't touch.

About zellige

What is zellige? Zellige (also spelled zellij) is a traditional North African handmade glazed ceramic tile. Each tile is individually pressed from clay, hand-glazed, and kiln-fired, producing a surface with natural variation in colour, sheen, and thickness.

Why is it more expensive than porcelain? It's entirely handmade. Labour-intensive production, small batch sizes, and higher wastage in both manufacturing and installation contribute to the price. Budget 10–15% extra wastage when ordering.

Where does it work best? Kitchen splashbacks, bathroom feature walls, butler's pantry walls, and powder room floors. Rarely used on main bathroom floors due to the uneven surface.

Do I need a specialist installer? Yes. Zellige requires an experienced tiler familiar with handmade tile. The variation in thickness means bed depth adjustment tile-by-tile.

Ordering zellige

Always order a sample. Screen colour and batch colour can differ significantly. Our sample service is $15 flat for up to 5 samples, credited back against your full order.

Order 15% more than your measured area. Between cuts, breakage, and natural imperfection, wastage runs higher than standard porcelain. Always over-order and keep offcuts.

Lead times. In-stock colourways ship within 5–10 business days. Special orders may require 6–10 weeks from Morocco or Europe.

Zellige tile questions

What is zellige and where is it made?

Zellige is handmade Moroccan ceramic tile: kiln-fired clay glazed with a depth and irregularity no machine-made tile can replicate. Authentic zellige comes from Fez, where the craft has been practised for 800+ years. The signature feature is the variation: no two tiles are identical.

Why is zellige more expensive than other tiles?

Each tile is hand-cut, hand-glazed and individually fired. There's no industrial production line. The ratio of usable tiles per batch is also lower than machine-made: only the best are exported. The cost reflects the labour and the rejection rate, not a margin.

Can I use zellige on a kitchen splashback?

Yes. Splashbacks are one of the best applications. The glaze is heat-stable, easy to clean, and the imperfect glaze depth catches light beautifully against the cooktop. Use a flexible adhesive, accept 3–5mm grout joints (zellige size varies), and pick a grout colour that complements the glaze tone.

How do I install zellige tiles?

Use a flexible C2 S1 adhesive minimum, back-butter each tile, and lay with 3–5mm grout joints to accommodate natural size variation. Mix from multiple boxes as you go to spread the colour variation evenly. Don't try to lay zellige with the precision you'd give a rectified porcelain. It's a different product.
