Choosing floor tiles

Slip rating is non-negotiable. Australian standards require R10 for residential wet areas (bathroom floors, laundries) and R11 for commercial or pool surrounds. All floor tiles on Marmoré carry their R rating on the product page — check it before ordering.

Large format vs small format. 600×1200 tiles have fewer grout lines and create a seamless, expansive look — ideal for open-plan living areas. Smaller formats (300×300, 600×600) are more forgiving on uneven substrates and easier to cut around obstacles.

Rectified tiles for tight joints. Rectified porcelain is precision-cut to allow 1–2mm joints — the contemporary look you see in design magazines. Non-rectified tiles need wider joints (3–5mm). Most quality porcelain from Marmoré is rectified.

Underfloor heating compatibility. Most porcelain tiles are compatible with electric and hydronic underfloor heating systems. Natural stone requires lower temperature settings. Check the product spec or contact us before ordering for a heated floor.

Ordering floor tiles

Calculate area + wastage. Measure your floor area (length × width in metres). Add 10% for straight lay, 15% for diagonal or herringbone pattern. A 20m² room needs 22m² of tile on a straight lay.

Order from one batch.Tile colour can vary slightly between production batches. Always order your full quantity in one order. If you need more tiles later, include the batch number from your invoice — we can try to match it, but can't guarantee availability.

Always sample first.Floor tile colour looks different in your actual light conditions. Our $15 sample service covers up to 5 tiles — the most important $15 you'll spend before a $2,000 tile order.

Floor tile questions

What slip rating do floor tiles need in Australia?

Residential bathroom wet areas require R10 minimum. Outdoor and pool surrounds typically require R11. All floor tiles on Marmoré list their R rating on the product page.

What is the best floor tile for living areas?

Large format porcelain (600×1200 or 800×800) in matt or honed finish is the most popular choice. Marble-look calacatta or travertine-look give a high-end result without the maintenance of natural stone.

How much floor tile do I need?

Measure floor area in m² (length × width). Add 10% for straight lay or 15% for diagonal/herringbone. Always round up to the nearest box.

Can I use indoor floor tiles outside?

No — outdoor areas require tiles rated for outdoor use with higher slip ratings and frost resistance. See our outdoor pavers section for externally-rated tiles.

Are large format tiles harder to install?

They require a very flat substrate (≤3mm under a 3m straightedge), back-buttering, and appropriate adhesive. Factor in substrate levelling costs if needed — the result is fewer grout lines and a premium finish.
